Ye Olde Closet Grow

Came across a bunch of random seed I had saved up from the rare occasion I'd find seeds in dispensary-obtained cannabis.

So I figured, why not? I got everything just sitting here, needs to be used. I'm going to run out of my stuff eventually and need more, might as well get on the ball!

So, for the most part, these seeds were found in three bottom-shelf strains offered by the dispensary - green crack, orange crush, and Pot of Gold.

Well, I know I could do better with my LEDs and hydro vs the dispensary HPS and Induction lamps (poor guys kept getting ballast burnouts on the inductions) and their rather clay-heavy soil, so I could take this low-grade harvest stuff and likely get mid-grade smoke, even if it does end up going hermie on me (I really don't mind that, I use every part of the plant, from seeds to stems. Seeds make great addition to baked goods and granola and cereals, or I can make hempseed milk, or press hemp oil.)

So off I go! Let's get down to the nitty-gritty.

I chose 10 seeds to soak in water. I am looking for 8 to germinate.

My setup is simple. Since I don't really need stealth, being a licensed medical grower, I can really cut down my operating costs and expenses. No need for carbon filter, and for exhausting heat, I can just open the doors a couple minutes a few times a day to allow air to exchange out, and just use a fan to make that happen faster.

So with that in mind, two pics. Germination area, and veg/flower area.

Germination area is simple. Glass of water, for seeds, tray of water for rockwool implantation after seeds germinate, under a 15w LED driven at 6w (12V @ 500mA) LED is a Cree MK-R on a SinkPad aluminum 20mm star. I'm just using the power supply from an old phone base wall wart to drive it, and a 12V 100ma wall wart for the fan.

Veg/Flower area is equally simple. All DWC buckets of two different types - Krusty Bucket and typical DWC net-pot. 8 sites, ranging from 11l-20l buckets. Two large dual-line air pumps, split at each nozzle to make 8 lines, feed air into the buckets. Dual 150w LED panels of my own custom spec (blue heavy for harder biomass growth and higher THC production) roll for the lighting, with a single T5HO lamp in there for the times I will need to make visual inspections under normal lighting conditions.

The ten seeds are already in the glass of water. Here we go!

Mate, you're using terms that are completely alien to me and I'm getting very confused.

Terms like 'Dispensary-obtained Cannabis' and 'Licenced Grower'....

Why oh why oh why oh why can't these terms be added to the English dictionary.
:grin:::::

Oh, just you wait. I will get into some very alien terms as things go on.

And yes, out here in California, if you've got the medical need, you can get your license to produce. You've got limits, but they're reasonable enough!

nice... interesting thread. will be good to see this setup fares against the old system. are you running the led setup in parallel to the hps btw, will you compare directly or by your experience?

Comparisons directly by own experience. I switched exclusively to LED back in 2008 and quite simply put I've never gone back.

I don't have my HPS any longer, though I'm actually pretty sure if I wanted it back, all I would have to do is ask my old pal. He switched to LED as well, so last I heard, that HPS was just sitting unused in the garage.

Well, nice to see that the seeds I've found are still quite viable! So far, 4 have their initial roots just peeping through the cracks, and a couple of others have split open. I'll give them another 12 hours before I pull them out and transplant into rockwool.

Well, 8 had sprouted, but I kinda smushed one trying to get it out of the glass, so I'm down to 7 opened seeds, and two left to go. I'm going ahead and moving the opened babies into their rockwool cubes, and hoping one of the remaining two seeds decides to grace me with a root.

Another seed popped open! There's my desired 8 plants! Now to hope that the majority (or all) are female!
