Nope, you did nothing wrong. The more light you can give the better, and being held back on positioning isn't really an issue as long as you are getting the lights to the plants.
I just like thinking a vertical plant would benefit more from a vertical light (more efficient top to bottom coverage.)
I made this half-assed diagram years ago, showing how I would utilize ~400w T5 vertically to obtain the best uniform lighting and the best yield.
Of course, now I use pure LED. T5 is only turned on when I need to see full-color :D
