Think Different and Automatic Northern Hog

OK here we go again.....

....it's gonna be a hard act to follow, my last grow was my best ever, with 2 Auto Ultimates giving me over half a kilo each.

Now it's time to prove it wasn't a fluke.

I am also gonna grow some strains that I have tried in the past.... and failed  .

Think Different, which I grew about 9 months ago, I over fed her in mid flowering and ended up with a lot of very weak bud.
...and ...
Automatic Northern Hog, which I tried about a year ago, in a heavy soil, coco sand mix.... the plant grew about 3cm in a month  .... in the end I abandoned the grow and switched to 100% coco..... with much more success!

As I still have at least 30 odd ounces of prime, grade A, Auto Ultimate sitting around, I thought a decent 100% Indica would be a nice change, so I have 2 Northern Hogs on the go, and just to keep the Sativa stocks up, why not have a Think Different as well?

Strain information.....

TH Seeds Iberica has crossed their legendary Cannabis Cup winning Hog (originating from Tennessee via San Diego) with a stable big producing Northern Lights from Spain. This plant is all about huge production. For an Autoflower plant Northern Hog can reach heights up to 1.8 meters and will need lots of water to support its huge indica bud production not to mention one of the highest THC testing for an autoflower at up to 17%. It is also surprisingly mould resistant. Seed to harvest is 70-77 days.

Think Different is a high yielding autoflowering strain with legendary superior potency levels.
A Dutch Passion genebank strain called AK420 was used to start the process, this is a heavy yielding AK47 hybrid with extreme potency levels. AK420 was systematically crossed with a carefully chosen Ruderalis.
Seed to harvest is 63-80 days, typically growing 1-1.5m tall
Composition: 60% Sativa, 20% Indica and 20% Ruderalis
Sweet and spicy scents with earthy, plum tones
Occasionally yielding 250-300g per plant under optimum conditions. THC levels measured at 18%

So, genetics are good, mould resistance is in place, I'm hoping for another good outcome.

I'm not gonna change a thing from my last grow, except keep the EC's even lower, maybe by a point or so..... 0.9 - 1.0 maximum.
Other than that, all the same.... I started them in 5L Airpots with 100% Coco Plus, with the usual germinaton technique of planting directly in the EC 0.6 soaked medium, covering with clingfilm and a piece of cardboard for shade, and sticking them under the lights. 100% - cheers AB!

I've dug out the Solis Tek 600 MH and have that covering the front half of the tent, and at the back, I have the trusty Helios 6 LED.

I keep 2 plants under the MH and one under the LED, and rotate them around so they get a bit of both lights. I'll keep it that way for most of the first 30 days while they veg. Once they start flowering, or get too tall, I will remove the MH, and use the Photon 126's.

I will also repot into 20L airpots at around 30 days, and perhaps do some supercropping if the need (hopefully) arises. I want to keep a lower canopy and avoid heat stressing them.

Here they are at day 10...

They're on a light feed with a total EC of 0.7. NPK 4.9 - 1.2 - 3.7 made up of EC 0.4 base nutrients with added Roots Excellurator and Nitrogen. EC 0 rainwater with suspected added Guano and snake shit.

Lights are on 24/0 for the first 2 weeks or so, then I'll switch to 22/2 and again to 20/4 as veg progresses.

That's about it for now..... send them some good vibes!

All growing the same strain..... even then, I Think we're all gonna have a very Different Christmas, :-P

Day 15 update

All is well and good over here..... my girls are looking different every day, I can't believe the change in 5 days.
They are on the same nutes as last time, EC 0.7, mainly cos I mixed up to much before, and couldn't be bothered to mix up a fresh EC 0.8 feed. Lighting as before as well.... a mix of LED and MH.

cheers Ledbud Mate, you've been a driving force!

I've been quite busy recently, and haven't been as diligent as usual, but the girls are doing well, I move them around frequently and water them once or twice a day. I had to check how far gone they were yesterday and was shocked to find out we're at day 25.... not long till my planned repot around day 30.....

day 26 update.

Feed was at EC 0.9 for the last 10 days, again, cos I mixed up a load, and as it ran out yesterday, I decided to mix up a new nutrient soup, with increased Cal-Mag at 0.2ml/L to buffer my EC 0 rainwater bringing it to EC0.2, then A&B to EC0.7
I always use Roots Excellurator at 0.3ml/L, and started adding Silicon in the form of Amino Treatment at 0.2ml/L and root enzymes in the form of Multizyme at 0.5ml/L. I also increased Nitrogen from 0.2ml/L to 0.25ml/L, giving a total EC of 1.0

Here they are.....

The Hogs are looking lush, but the (slightly larger and usually very perky) TD is looking a bit droopy this morning..... I just checked her pot and she felt a bit light, so I've given her another watering and will see how she picks up. If no joy, I'll drop her EC back to 0.9.

Thanks for dropping in, and all the best of growing karma to you and your grows!

cheers Ledbud, so far so good..... they seem to be following a similar pattern to the AU grow..... hopefully!

A few days ago on day 25, I upped the EC to 1.0 and they responded well. The slightly wilted TD picked up very quickly after her feed..... thet's the problem with 5L airpots, they dry out very quickly once the plant is 2-3 weeks old. I figured by day 30, it should be safe to repot them into 20L airpots.

On day 30, I made up another feed upping the Nitrogen to 0.3ml/L, Multizyme to 0.75ml/L and the Amino Treatment to 0.25ml/L, still keeping it at EC1.0 (total NPK = 115.8-18-54.3) and gave them a good watering in the morning, and later in the afternoon I got on with repotting them. I tried to work as quickly as possible, and did my best not to touch the exposed roots when I removed the 5L airpot. Once repotted, I gave them a good final feed and a little tidy up of some poxy lower leaves.

I don't like to cut any leaves if at all possible in the veg stage as I feel they have a function, and removing them only serves to reduce the plant's potential. I think of them as energy storage and engines. A bit later on, once the canopy is more established, I might remove some of the very lowest stems.

Here's TD before.....

....and TD after....

Here's NH1 before....

Here's NH2 before.....

.....then I ran out of Coco dammit  so I put them back in the tent. There's no hydro shops nearby, but while out later on in the arvo, I happened to drive past a Bee and Queue type DIY place, and just on the off chance they had some compacted Coco blocks, so I just mixed up some with a little shake of Great White trichoderma and used it to finish off repotting NH2..... so here she is, with her sisters all in new shoes.... 20L ones.
day 30 NH2-2.JPG

Today on day 32, they have responded well to the repotting, and are exploding with growth.
day 32 group shot.JPG

TD front left, NH2 front right and NH1 at the back

The Hogs are gonna stretch quite a bit by the looks of things, and are showing lovely early pistils, but TD is just slightly ahead in terms of flowering.

Heights are all around 55-60cm already, so looks like I might have to supercrop at some point to keep the canopy low.

One more week with the LED / MH mix, then I'll switch to full LED, and give them a panel each. I am still rotating and moving them around, but will eventually settle with the 2 Hogs at the front with the TD at the back, and see if I can get the hedges going again with a bit of careful supercropping to the sides.

EC is still at 1.0.

Hope all is well with your grows, thanks for popping in!

More soon!
