Making Oils With 1950s Technology

I'm a bit of a scavenger, and I live in an area where students are constantly moving in and out. As a result, you tend to catch them throwing out stuff you'd really like.

I scored two Salton Hotray warming trays, made in the 1950s. I used to use a chemistry set with proper mantle and sohxlet extractor and fractional distilation pieces for making oils, but my mantle broke and I haven't had opportunity to get a new one.

Well, these Hotrays will serve the purpose just fine!

I did a test run. About 7g of cannabis leaf and such, roughly 3 fl.oz of acetone. Drop the mix into a very fine mesh cloth, squeeze out onto a plate, set plate atop the Hotray at maximum temperature.

The rate of evaporation is insane compared to my 'proper' chemistry set, primarily due to the greatly increased surface area and airflow available when using a plate instead of a closed set of glass tubes! The whole process, from wash to full acetone evaporation, is under 30 minutes.

Absolutely delicious.

1950s technology for the win! Works just like the day it was made!
